Ovayok Territorial Park is referred to as Ekaluktutiak, meaning âgood fishing placeâ, an activity that has taken place here for centuries. Evidence of past use of the site is found in extensive archaeological records. The theme of Ovayokâs Heritage Appreciation Plan is âLand of Legends.â The âOrigin of Deathâ legend tells the story of the Ovayok giant and his family, who, after death, became the large eskers that are a prominent feature of the parkâs landscape. The Master, Management, and Heritage Appreciation Plans provide guidance for protecting the natural and cultural resources of the park, the development and management of infrastructure and interpretive panels, and the sharing of traditional stories with all visitors.
