Ovayok Territorial Park is referred to as Ekaluktutiak, meaning “good fishing place”, an activity that has taken place here for centuries. Evidence of past use of the site is found in extensive archaeological records. The theme of Ovayok’s Heritage Appreciation Plan is “Land of Legends.” The “Origin of Death” legend tells the story of the Ovayok giant and his family, who, after death, became the large eskers that are a prominent feature of the park’s landscape. The Master, Management, and Heritage Appreciation Plans provide guidance for protecting the natural and cultural resources of the park, the development and management of infrastructure and interpretive panels, and the sharing of traditional stories with all visitors.
